Cyber neighborhood watch

I stumbled upon this nifty little tool that gives yet another level of functionality to Google Maps.
New Orleans Crime Watch aims to create an "open source crime mapping, reporting, and alert system for the community, so that citizens might have a greater awareness about the safety of their neighborhoods".

Safety? More paranoid, perhaps. But even so, the concept is pretty cool. And furthermore they claim that it's adaptable to use by various neighborhood watch organizations, and very self-managable. The concept has me thinking, "hmmm... what could I use this for?"
